Is there a credit card i can apply for in the US that works in the UK permanently?

i'm moving to the UK but would like to apply for a credit card before i go (am in Seattle currently) that will work over there for an indefinite amount of time. do visas, mastercards, discovers, and amex's all work over there? or is it just an AMEX? thanks.
