Why is it that the Spanish are so flexible in what leagues they play in while the English are more rigid in?

the EPL. I see Spanish players in all major leagues, and to a lesser degree Italian players as well, but the only major English player that does not play in England is Beckham, which is past his prime. What is the reason for this?
