Mens clothing measurements for coats and jackets?

I am needing to know what a numerical size would be converted into a letter size. meaning, a size 40 leather coat would be equivalent to a size what? L? XL? XXL? XXXL? so on and so forth. plz it is needed for a Christmas gift and is going to have to be ordered. so any help would be perfect. plz and thank you
